{"data":{"description":"Archiving Early America - Northwest Ordinance","title":"Northwest Ordinance","post_type":"page","content":"\u003ch2 style=\"color: #ad8431;\"\u003eAn Ordinance for the Government of the Territory of the United States, North-West of the River Ohio.\r\nAs it appears in the Supplement to the First Volume of the Columbian Magazine, Philadelphia, 1787.\u003c/h2\u003e\r\n\u0026nbsp;\r\n\u003cp style=\"color: #000000;\"\u003eConsidered to be one of the most significant achievements of the Congress of the Confederation, the \u003cstrong\u003eNorthwest Ordinance of 1787\u003c/strong\u003e put the world on notice not only that the land north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi would be settled but that it would eventually become part of the United States. Until then this area had been temporarily forbidden to development.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cdiv class=\"bdritlt\" style=\"color: #000000;\"\u003eIncreasing numbers of settlers and land speculators were attracted to what are now the states of \u003cstrong\u003eOhio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin\u003c/strong\u003e. This pressure together with the demand from the Ohio Land Company, soon to obtain vast holdings in the Northwest, prompted the Congress to pass this Ordinance\u003c/div\u003e\r\n\u003cdiv class=\"bdritlt\" style=\"color: #000000;\"\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\r\n\u003cdiv class=\"bdritlt\" style=\"color: #000000;\"\u003e\u003ca style=\"color: #990000;\" href=\"/earlyamerica/rare-images/places/\"\u003eSee Cities \u0026 Places in Early America!\u003c/a\u003e\u003c/div\u003e\r\n\u003cp style=\"color: #000000;\"\u003eThe area opened up by the Ordinance was based on lines originally laid out in 1784 by Thomas Jefferson in his Report of Government for Western Lands. The Ordinance provided for the creation of not less than three nor more than five states.
