Understand the journey from raw answers to your composite score and what it means for college admissions.
The ACT (American College Testing) was created in 1959 by Everett Franklin Lindquist, an education professor at the University of Iowa. At the time, the SAT was the dominant college entrance exam, but Lindquist believed a test more closely aligned to high school curricula would be a fairer measure of what students actually learned. Rather than testing abstract reasoning alone, the ACT was designed to measure achievement in core academic areas: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science.
Over the decades, the ACT scoring system has been refined to give colleges a standardized way to compare applicants from different schools, states, and backgrounds. The scoring scale — 1 to 36 — has remained remarkably stable since the test's early years, but the addition of the optional Writing section in 2005 and periodic adjustments to score reporting have kept the system evolving. Understanding how the scoring works gives you a strategic advantage: you can set realistic goals, identify which sections to prioritize, and make smarter decisions about retesting.

The conversion from raw score to scaled score (Stage 2 → Stage 3 in our pipeline) is the step where equating takes place. On an easier test form, you might need 58 out of 60 on Math to earn a 36, while on a harder form you might only need 55 out of 60. The conversion table published after each test date reflects this adjustment. You cannot predict the exact table before test day, but practice tests with scoring charts give you a reliable estimate.
Your ACT score report contains more than just the composite. Understanding every number on the report helps you identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. The diagram below shows a sample score report layout with all the key components.

Your scaled score and composite tell one story, but colleges also look at percentile ranks and College Readiness Benchmarks. Your percentile tells you what percentage of test-takers scored at or below your score. For example, if your composite is at the 85th percentile, you scored as well as or better than 85% of all students who took the ACT.

ACT also publishes College Readiness Benchmarks — minimum section scores that indicate a student has a roughly 50% chance of earning a B or higher in the corresponding first-year college course. The current benchmarks are: English 18, Math 22, Reading 22, and Science 23. Meeting all four benchmarks suggests you are well-prepared for college-level coursework across disciplines.
The ACT scoring system transforms your test performance through a clear pipeline. First, your raw score — the total number of correct answers on each section — is calculated with no penalty for guessing.
