Most people rank public speaking among their biggest fears — but it's also one of the most learnable skills in existence, and the students who get comfortable with it early have an edge that lasts a lifetime. Learn to Love Public Speaking is a weekly class for students in grades 3–5 where every session focuses on a different technique or speech type: how to organize your thoughts before you speak, how to project your voice and own the room, how to handle nerves, how to lead a conversation, and more. Led by an experienced instructor who — by nature of the job — genuinely loves public speaking, this class builds confidence in students who'd rather stay quiet and sharpens the skills of those who already enjoy being heard.
The Fear Is Real — And Completely Beatable
Public speaking consistently ranks among the top human fears. But there's a meaningful difference between that fear and most others: this one is almost entirely curable with practice. The students who start building that practice in elementary school aren't just learning a skill — they're building a relationship with speaking in front of others that will serve them in every classroom presentation, every job interview, and every conversation where someone needs to speak up. This class is where that relationship starts.
A Different Technique Every Week
The weekly format keeps things fresh and gives students a complete toolkit over time. Each session introduces a new speech type or speaking technique: one week might focus on informative speeches and how to organize your thoughts; the next might cover persuasive speaking and what makes an argument compelling; another might work on narrative speeches and how to tell a story that holds attention. Students learn by doing — each class involves actual speaking practice, not just listening to explanations about speaking.
The Real Work: Managing Nerves and Building Confidence
Knowing how to write a speech is different from having the confidence to deliver it. This class spends meaningful time on the psychological side of public speaking: what causes the nervous feeling, why it doesn't have to get in the way, and what specific habits — preparation routines, reframing nervousness as excitement, breathing techniques — can make the difference between freezing and flowing. The goal is for students to develop a genuine, earned sense of comfort with being heard.
Beyond Speeches: Conversations, Leadership, and Voice
Public speaking isn't just about prepared presentations. Students also develop skills for spontaneous communication: how to initiate a conversation, how to speak up in a group discussion, and how to express ideas clearly and confidently in real time. The students who leave this class don't just give better speeches — they become people who speak up.
