ABOUT THIS CLASS

Is your child heading into first grade this fall? This summer course gives young readers the phonics foundation they need to hit the ground running. Students will tackle short and long vowel sounds, crack the code on "Bossy R" words, explore vowel teams like "ai" and "ay," and practice blending sounds to read real words and stories. By the end of the course, kids won't just recognize letters — they'll confidently decode new words on their own. It's the perfect summer bridge between kindergarten and first grade.

SYLLABUS

Who This Course Is For This course is designed for students finishing kindergarten who are getting ready to step into first grade reading. If your child knows their letters but is still working on putting sounds together smoothly, this is exactly where they need to be. Over multiple sessions, a dedicated instructor guides students through the core phonics concepts that first-grade reading is built on — in a live, interactive setting where kids get real practice, real feedback, and real confidence.

Vowel Sounds: Short, Long, and Everything In Between The course starts with the building blocks: short vowel sounds. Students practice hearing and producing the sounds that a, e, i, o, and u make in words like "elephant," "igloo," and "up." From there, they discover that those same vowels can "say their name" — making the long vowel sounds heard in words like "cake" and "pine." Understanding the difference between short and long vowels is one of the most important early reading skills, and students get plenty of guided practice to make it stick.

Vowel Teams, Bossy R, and Diphthongs Once students have a handle on the basics, the course dives into the patterns that trip up even motivated young readers. Vowel teams like "ai" (train) and "ay" (day) teach students that two vowels working together can make a completely new sound. Then comes the "Bossy R" — r-controlled vowels like "ar," "er," "ir," "or," and "ur" that change the sound of the vowel before them, appearing in everyday words like "car," "her," "bird," "fork," and "burn." Students also explore diphthongs — sounds like /oy/ in "boy" and /ow/ in "cow" — where the tongue actually moves mid-sound. Learning to recognize these patterns gives kids a powerful toolkit for decoding words they've never seen before.

Decoding, Fluency, and Comprehension Phonics isn't just about isolated sounds — it's about reading real words, real sentences, and real stories. Students practice blending sounds together to decode unfamiliar words, and they build a foundation of sight words that they can recognize instantly. Reading aloud with accuracy and expression is woven throughout the course, helping students develop fluency alongside their phonics skills. Comprehension strategies — like identifying the main idea, making predictions, and retelling stories — make sure students aren't just reading words, but actually understanding what they read.

What Students Walk Away With By the end of this course, students will have the tools to approach a new word and figure it out — not just guess. They'll recognize key vowel patterns, blend sounds smoothly, and read short texts with growing confidence. Whether your child is a little ahead, right on track, or needs a boost before first grade begins, this course meets them where they are and moves them forward.
