AP Computer Science A: 8-Week Exam Review provides a comprehensive review of essential Java programming concepts and prepares students for the AP Computer Science A exam. Through hands-on exercises and targeted instruction, students will solidify their understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms, enabling them to confidently tackle both multiple-choice and free-response questions on the exam.

Java Fundamentals

  • Primitive data types (int, double, boolean) — including their characteristics and appropriate usage
  • Variables, operators, and expressions — mastering the building blocks of Java syntax
  • Control flow statements (if/else, loops) — implementing decision-making and iteration in code

Object-Oriented Programming

  • Classes and objects — defining blueprints and creating instances with attributes and behaviors
  • Methods — designing reusable code blocks that perform specific actions within a class
  • Constructors — initializing objects and ensuring proper object state upon creation
  • Encapsulation — bundling data and methods within a class to protect data integrity

Strings and the Math Class

  • String manipulation — using built-in methods for searching, extracting, and modifying text
  • The Math class — leveraging mathematical functions like abs(), sqrt(), and pow()
  • Random number generation — utilizing Math.random() to simulate events and create dynamic behavior
  • Scaling and truncating random numbers — generating random integers within specific ranges

Arrays and ArrayLists

  • One-dimensional arrays — storing and accessing collections of elements of the same data type
  • ArrayLists — utilizing dynamic arrays that automatically resize as needed
  • Array traversal — efficiently iterating through arrays using loops
  • Common array algorithms — searching, sorting, insertion, deletion, and reversal
  • Two-dimensional arrays — representing tables of data and performing operations on rows and columns

Searching and Sorting Algorithms

  • Selection sort — understanding the step-by-step process of this in-place comparison sort
  • Algorithm analysis — recognizing the characteristics and efficiency of different sorting approaches

Exam Preparation

  • Multiple-choice strategies — approaching different question types and eliminating incorrect answers
  • Free-response question techniques — planning, coding, and debugging solutions within time constraints
  • Code analysis — interpreting code snippets and predicting their behavior
  • Practice questions — working through realistic exam-style problems to build confidence and refine skills
