Building Blocks of 2nd Grade Reading empowers young readers to dissect and comprehend stories by focusing on core narrative elements. Students will learn to identify key components and understand how they contribute to the overall meaning and impact of a story, building a strong foundation for reading comprehension.

Character Identification and Analysis

  • Recognize main characters—those central to driving the plot
  • Distinguish supporting characters—understanding their roles in relation to the protagonist
  • Analyze character traits and motivations—how characters' feelings and actions shape the story
  • Infer lessons from character choices—extracting morals and understanding consequences

Setting: Time and Place

  • Determine where a story takes place—identifying the physical environment
  • Establish when a story happens—understanding the temporal context
  • Examine how setting influences the mood and events of the story—analyzing the impact of environment on characters and plot

Events: Plot Development

  • Identify key events that propel the narrative forward
  • Understand how events create problems and solutions within the story
  • Recognize story sequencing using temporal keywords (first, then, next, finally)
  • Utilize transition words to understand the order of events

Story Elements and Authorial Intent

  • Understand how characters, setting, and events work together
  • Explain the purpose of stories made to entertain
  • Understand how a story's purpose and the message being portrayed affects these elements

Active Reading Strategies

  • Asking questions—encouraging curiosity and deeper thinking about the story
