Building Blocks of 5th Grade Reading & Writing empowers young learners with essential literacy skills, focusing on genre identification and comprehension to enhance reading and writing abilities. Through engaging activities and clear explanations, students will develop a strong foundation for analyzing texts and expressing themselves creatively. By the end of this course, participants will confidently navigate various literary genres and apply their knowledge to improve their overall academic performance.

Understanding Genre Fundamentals

  • Defining genre — learning how authors and readers categorize different types of writing.
  • Identifying common genre characteristics — recognizing elements that distinguish one genre from another.
  • Exploring various genres — fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and informational texts.

Fiction Genre Deep Dive

  • Analyzing subgenres of fiction — mystery, fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, and realistic fiction.
  • Identifying key elements in fiction — plot, character, setting, theme, and conflict.
  • Recognizing narrative structures — understanding how stories are organized and how events unfold.

Non-Fiction Exploration

  • Differentiating between types of nonfiction — informational, persuasive, biographical, and autobiographical texts.
