Jump Start to Algebra 1 prepares students for success in Algebra 1 by building a strong foundation in algebraic concepts and problem-solving techniques. Students will learn to translate real-world scenarios into mathematical models and use these models to make predictions and solve problems. By the end of this course, students will be well-equipped to tackle the challenges of Algebra 1 with confidence.

Variables and Expressions

  • Define variables as unknown placeholders in equations — typically represented by letters such as x, y, a, or b
  • Understand the role of variables in representing unknown quantities
  • Differentiate between terms, expressions, and equations — and their components

Equation Building

  • Translate word problems into mathematical equations — with a focus on real-world applications
  • Define variables within the context of a given problem
  • Represent real-world scenarios with linear equations —setting the stage for algebraic modeling

Solving Equations

  • Apply algebraic principles to solve for unknown variables
  • Isolate variables using inverse operations — addition/subtraction, multiplication/division
  • Verify solutions by substituting values back into the original equation

Patterns and Rates

  • Identify patterns in data sets and represent them mathematically
  • Calculate rates of change — connecting to the concept of slope
  • Use rates and patterns to make predictions

Tables and Graphs

  • Construct tables to organize data and identify relationships
  • Translate data from tables into graphical representations
  • Interpret graphs to understand patterns and trends — laying the groundwork for functions

Slope and Intercepts

  • Define slope as the rate of change in a linear relationship
  • Connect slope to real-world scenarios — such as cost functions or rates of travel
  • Determine intercepts from equations, tables, and graphs

Predictive Modeling

  • Use algebraic equations to create predictive models
  • Apply models to estimate costs, outcomes, and other real-world quantities
  • Evaluate the accuracy and limitations of predictive models
