Social Communication on The Spectrum: Building Confidence and Connection

This course provides students on the autism spectrum with practical tools and strategies to navigate social situations with greater confidence and ease. Students will develop enhanced self-awareness, emotional regulation skills, and the ability to understand and respond to social cues, ultimately fostering more meaningful connections and improving overall social well-being. By the end of this course, students will possess a comprehensive social toolbox and be able to confidently apply learned skills in real-world scenarios.

Understanding and Managing Personal Emotions

  • Developing self-awareness—identifying and acknowledging one's own feelings and emotional triggers
  • Emotional regulation techniques—strategies to manage and respond to emotions in healthy ways
  • Recognizing the impact of emotions—understanding how personal emotions affect interactions with others

Decoding Social Cues and Reading Emotions in Others

  • Interpreting nonverbal communication—analyzing facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice
  • Recognizing emotional states—identifying feelings in others based on observed cues
  • Perspective-taking—understanding situations from another person's point of view to foster empathy

Initiating and Maintaining Conversations

  • Conversation starters—techniques for confidently initiating interactions
  • Active listening—engaging fully in conversations by paying attention and responding appropriately
  • Turn-taking skills—learning how to contribute to conversations without interrupting

Expressing Kindness and Appreciation

  • Giving compliments—offering genuine and specific praise to others
  • Using kind words—choosing language that is supportive and encouraging
  • Recognizing the impact of kindness—understanding how simple acts of kindness can positively affect others
