Summer Learning: Bridging the Gap to 7th Grade Reading equips students with essential reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, preparing them for success in the upcoming academic year and beyond. Through engaging activities and collaborative discussions, students will develop the ability to analyze texts, identify authorial intent, construct well-supported arguments, and confidently decode unfamiliar vocabulary. By the end of this course, students will be well-prepared to tackle increasingly complex reading materials.

Figurative Language and Meaning

  • Explore various types of figurative language — similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole.
  • Learn to interpret implied meanings and "read between the lines" to uncover deeper layers of understanding.
  • Use context clues effectively to decipher unfamiliar phrases and expressions.

Author's Purpose and Perspective

  • Identify the author's primary goal in writing a text — to inform, persuade, entertain, or describe.
  • Analyze how an author's background and biases shape their point of view.
  • Differentiate between objective and subjective writing styles.

Argumentation and Claims

  • Define what constitutes a strong claim or thesis statement in an argumentative text.
  • Locate and evaluate supporting evidence used to justify an author's claims.
  • Identify logical fallacies and rhetorical devices that may weaken an argument.

Critical Thinking and Evaluation

  • Develop strategies for thinking critically about the information presented in a text.
  • Distinguish between facts and opinions, and identify potential biases.
  • Evaluate the credibility and reliability of sources.

Decoding and Vocabulary Expansion

  • Utilize various decoding strategies to decipher unfamiliar words — prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
  • Expand vocabulary through contextual analysis and dictionary usage.
  • Employ techniques for retaining and applying newly learned vocabulary.

Reading Comprehension Strategies

  • Apply active reading techniques — annotating, summarizing, and questioning.
  • Improve focus and concentration while reading.
  • Develop effective note-taking methods for future review.
