Why Do We Share What We Think?
Have you ever told a friend, "I love that book!" or "Recess is the best part of the day!"? When you say things like that, you are sharing your opinion. An opinion is what you think or feel about something. People have been sharing opinions for a very, very long time!
When you write down your opinion, more people can know what you think. It also helps them understand why you think that way. That is what an opinion piece is โ a piece of writing where you say what you think and give a reason.
The Three Big Parts of an Opinion Piece
Every good opinion piece has three parts. Think of them like building blocks. You need all three to build something strong!
Name Your Topic
State Your Opinion
Give a Reason
Put It All Together
See What an Opinion Piece Looks Like
Let's look at a picture that shows the three parts of an opinion piece. Each part has its own color so you can see how they fit together.
See how each part has its own job? The topic is on top so the reader knows what you are talking about right away. The opinion goes in the middle because it is the main thing you want to say. The reason goes on the bottom to hold up your opinion and make it strong.
How to Write Each Part
Let's learn how to write each of the three parts step by step. It is easier than you might think!
๐ต Part 1: Name Your Topic
Start by telling your reader what you are writing about. You might write about a book, a game, a food, or even the weather!
๐ฃ Part 2: Say Your Opinion
Now tell what YOU think. An opinion is not right or wrong. It is just how you feel! Other people might feel different, and that is okay.
๐ก Part 3: Give a Reason
Tell WHY you think that. A reason helps your reader understand your opinion. Use the word "because" โ it is a magic word for giving reasons!
Opinion Words You Can Use
Some words help people know that you are sharing an opinion. These are special words that make your writing clear. Here are words you can use!
| Opinion Words | What They Sound Like |
|---|---|
| I think | "I think dogs are the best pets." |
| I like | "I like pizza more than tacos." |
| I believe | "I believe reading is fun." |
| My favorite | "My favorite color is blue." |
| The best | "The best season is summer." |
| because | "I think that because it makes me happy." |
The word because is one of the most helpful words when writing an opinion piece. It connects your opinion to your reason. When someone reads "because," they know the reason is coming next!
