In the metric system, every step between prefixes is × 10 or ÷ 10. Kilo → base → milli is just moving the decimal point. This makes metric conversions very predictable.

The Math Behind Conversions

Every conversion problem follows the same simple pattern. You take the number you start with and either multiply or divide by a conversion factor. Here are the formulas you need.

BIG UNIT → SMALL UNIT
Small units = Big units × Conversion factor
Example: 5 feet = 5 × 12 = 60 inches. You multiply because you are breaking big pieces into smaller pieces.
SMALL UNIT → BIG UNIT
Big units = Small units ÷ Conversion factor
Example: 48 ounces = 48 ÷ 16 = 3 pounds. You divide because you are grouping small pieces into bigger groups.

Move the decimal point left or right by counting prefix steps
In the metric system, each prefix step is × 10 or ÷ 10. From kilometers to meters, move the decimal 3 places to the right (× 1,000). From millimeters to meters, move it 3 places to the left (÷ 1,000).
