Does your middle schooler fill notebooks with stories, poems or scripts that never quite get finished? In Creative Writing Workshop, young writers try fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and scriptwriting with a live instructor, building characters with real flaws, mapping plots that keep readers hooked, writing dialogue that sounds natural, and revising their own work. By the end, each student will have a portfolio of original pieces in more than one genre. For young writers with more ideas than finished pages.
Finding Your Voice Across Genres You'll explore how tone, perspective, and audience shape writing while experimenting with fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and scriptwriting to discover where your strengths lie.
Characters and Plot Structure You'll build characters with rich backstories, clear motivations, and believable flaws, then map plots across the full narrative arc using conflict, foreshadowing, and suspense to keep readers hooked.
Setting, Imagery, and Dialogue You'll use sensory details and fresh figurative language to make settings feel real, and write dialogue that sounds natural while revealing character and moving the story forward.
Revision, Feedback, and Your Portfolio You'll practice self-editing for structure, pacing, clarity, and style, trade constructive feedback with fellow writers, and shape your pieces into a portfolio of original work.
