Building Blocks of 1st Grade Reading

First grade reading is where everything starts — phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, story structure — and the students who truly master these skills don't just read better now, they decode faster, comprehend deeper, and write more clearly for years to come. Building Blocks of 1st Grade Reading is a year-round supplemental class designed for students who are already working through these skills in school and want to own them completely, not just pass a unit and move on. Each session targets the foundational skills that 1st grade teachers have to move past whether every student has locked them in or not: short and long vowel sounds, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs, story elements, character analysis, main idea, and reading comprehension strategies. Students work through real texts, practice out loud, and build the kind of automaticity that makes everything else in their reading lives faster and easier.
