Advanced Topics

Operations with Rational Numbers

What Are Rational Numbers?

Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as fractions, including whole numbers, decimals, and negative numbers.

Adding and Subtracting

To add or subtract rational numbers, make sure the denominators are the same for fractions, and line up the decimal points for decimals.

Multiplying and Dividing

  • To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and denominators.
  • To divide fractions, multiply by the reciprocal (flip the second fraction).

Working With Negatives

Remember the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing negative numbers!

Why Do We Care?

These skills help us with everything from measuring distances to handling money—even when the values are less than zero!

Examples

  • Adding \(-4\) and \(7.2\) gives \(3.2\).

  • Multiplying \(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{3}{4} = \frac{6}{12} = \frac{1}{2}\).

In a Nutshell

Rational numbers include fractions, decimals, and negatives, and we use operations to work with them.
