ABOUT THIS CLASS

¡Bienvenidos! If you've ever wanted to hold a real conversation in Spanish, this is where you start. Hola! Beginner Spanish for Middle School is designed for students with little to no prior experience who are ready to dive into one of the world's most widely spoken languages. Over the course of several live, interactive sessions, you'll go from "Hola" to introducing yourself, asking questions, describing people and places, and even talking about your favorite sports and hobbies — all in Spanish. Along the way, you'll explore the cultures, traditions, and music of the Spanish-speaking world, making language learning feel less like a class and more like an adventure. Whether you're prepping for school Spanish, planning future travel, or just love learning new things, this course gives you the real foundation to keep going.

SYLLABUS

What This Course Is All About

Hola! Beginner Spanish for Middle School is a lively, engaging introduction to Spanish for students who are starting from scratch — or very close to it. This isn't a memorize-the-textbook kind of class. Every session is built around real communication: saying hello, making introductions, asking questions, and talking about the things you actually care about. By the time the course wraps up, students will be able to hold a simple conversation in Spanish, read and write basic phrases, and feel genuinely excited about continuing to learn.

Speaking and Listening First

The course puts talking front and center. Students start with the building blocks of real conversation — greetings like Hola, Buenos días, Buenas tardes, and Buenas noches — and quickly move into introductions (Yo me llamo..., ¿Cómo te llamas?, Mucho gusto) and polite exchanges (¿Cómo estás?, Gracias, De nada). A major early focus is pronunciation: students drill the five Spanish vowel sounds, tackle tricky consonants like ll and ñ, and practice the rhythm and intonation that make Spanish sound like Spanish. Role-playing dialogues, trivia games, and call-and-response activities keep practice feeling fun and fast-paced.

Grammar That Makes Sense

Rather than overwhelming beginners with rules, this course introduces grammar the way language actually works — in context. Students learn the core Spanish pronouns (yo, tú, usted, él, ella) and understand right away why the vs. usted distinction matters in real life. From there, they explore present-tense verb conjugation with high-frequency verbs like ser, estar, and regular -ar/-er/-ir verbs, building simple sentences they can actually use. Word order, subject-verb agreement, and question formation are all introduced through practice sentences, not abstract drills.

Vocabulary That Goes Places

Students build a practical core vocabulary across topics they encounter every day: numbers, colors, days of the week, months of the year, family members, food, sports, hobbies, and places. Phrases like Voy a... (I am going to...) give students tools to talk about plans and activities right away. Descriptive adjectives let them describe people, places, and things. By the end of the course, students have the vocabulary to navigate real conversations about themselves and their world.

Culture Woven Throughout

Language learning doesn't happen in a vacuum, and this course makes sure students understand the cultural world their new language opens up. Depending on the cohort, students explore Spanish-speaking cultures through virtual visits to iconic landmarks in Barcelona, discussions of Hispanic traditions and celebrations, and even popular Spanish-language music — songs like Soy Yo and Vivir Mi Vida that make pronunciation practice genuinely enjoyable. These cultural touchpoints give students context for why language sounds and works the way it does, and spark real curiosity about the broader Spanish-speaking world.

What Students Walk Away With

By the end of this course, students can introduce themselves, exchange greetings, ask and answer basic questions, describe people and things, and talk about their likes, dislikes, and daily activities — all in Spanish. More importantly, they walk away with confidence: the sense that Spanish is learnable, that real conversations are within reach, and that they have a genuine foundation to build on in school and beyond.
