Overcoming Academic Challenges: My Journey in Computer Science by Abdoul - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

One of the most challenging academic experiences I’ve faced was participating in the Running Start program while still in high school. The program allowed me to take college courses at a local community college, earning credits toward both my high school diploma and my future degree. While it was an incredible opportunity to get ahead academically, it was also one of the most demanding periods of my life. Juggling high school and college-level coursework was tough enough, but my responsibilities didn’t end there. I also worked part-time at Journeys in South Hill Mall to cover gas and other necessities. Balancing the demands of school and work while trying to stay on top of my assignments often felt overwhelming. There were days when I would leave my college classes and immediately head to my high school, only to finish the day at work. By the time I got home, I was exhausted, yet I still had homework and projects to complete. Along with being a student athlete, time management quickly became a critical skill for me. I had to learn how to plan my days down to the hour, ensuring I could meet deadlines while also keeping up with my responsibilities at work. Despite the difficulties, I successfully completed the Running Start program and graduated from high school with both my diploma and college credits. Looking back, I’m proud of how I managed to navigate such a hectic schedule while staying committed to my goals. The experience taught me resilience, the value of hard work, and the importance of prioritizing my time effectively. Now, as I continue my journey as a computer science major at Saint Martin’s University, I carry those lessons with me. Balancing high school, college, and work was one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced, but it proved that I am capable of handling adversity and staying focused on what matters most. It’s an experience that has shaped me into the determined and resourceful person I am today.
