The fight for equality by Abigail - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

When choosing a News Media major, I knew it would be a struggle. Sports Media is dominated by the male population and in modern times we see a lack of women in media, specifically sports media. Throughout my high school career, I have faced issues with gender discrimination within the sports media world. Men are seen as “more knowledgeable” about sports, which is not factually correct. I believe anyone can obtain sports knowledge with determination and drive, which are two things I possess.
One obstacle I have faced in the sports media world is that many assume I know nothing about sports. In my freshman year of high school, I was tasked with writing the sports updates and information on our school newspaper. I remember one of the boys from my language arts class telling me “You’re a girl, you shouldn’t be writing about men’s sports”. This was my first time experiencing such a sexiest comment, and 15-year-old me was devasted. However, my devastation was short lived. I vowed to myself that I would show that women are worthy of respect within the sports community. I have experienced many sexiest comments about my involvement within the sports media world. Women have fought for years for the right to be seen as equals to their male counterparts, and it saddens me to know that I have to join the fight. In modern times, there is still a sexist mindset within society.
I have faced sexism not only within the sports media world but also in my day to day. I have joined the fight for the right to be seen as an “equal”, and I will continue to fight.
