Describe a challenging academic experience and how you overcame it by Abigail - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

During my high school years, I have faced several academic challenges, but one of the most daunting has been presenting projects in front of my class. Public speaking does not come naturally to me, and I often find myself anxious and nervous before a presentation. Additionally, chemistry, particularly Chemistry II, has been a tough subject for me. Balancing these challenges while maintaining a strong academic record and working every day has been a true test of my perseverance and dedication.

Presenting in front of classmates has always been intimidating. The thought of standing up and speaking while everyone watches is nerve-wracking. To overcome this, I decided to tackle my fear head-on. I practiced extensively, rehearsing in front of family and friends to build my confidence. Their feedback was invaluable, and over time, I became more comfortable with public speaking. I also reminded myself that everyone in the class was there to learn, just like me, which helped ease my anxiety.

Chemistry II presented a different kind of challenge. The concepts were complex, and I struggled to grasp them initially. However, I was determined not to let this affect my academic performance. I sought help from my teacher, who was patient and explained the topics in a way that made sense to me. I also asked for help from my classmates. This collaborative approach not only improved my understanding but also made learning more enjoyable.

Balancing academics with work was another hurdle. Working every day taught me the importance of time management and discipline. I created a schedule that allowed me to allocate specific times for studying, working, and relaxing. This organization helped me stay on top of my assignments and maintain my GPA of 3.8. It was not easy, but the experience taught me valuable lessons in responsibility and prioritization.

Through these challenges, I learned the importance of perseverance and seeking support when needed. Whether it was practicing presentations, tackling chemistry problems, or managing my time effectively, I realized that I could overcome obstacles with determination and the right strategies. These experiences reinforced my passion for teaching and education. I want to be a teacher who understands students' struggles and helps them find ways to succeed.

As I look forward to attending Lakeland University, I am excited to pursue my studies in teaching, teacher education, and childcare. I am eager to learn how to create supportive learning environments and inspire students to overcome their own challenges. The skills and resilience I developed in high school will serve me well in my future academic and professional endeavors.

In conclusion, facing the challenges of public speaking, Chemistry II, and balancing work with academics has been a significant part of my high school journey. These experiences taught me perseverance, collaboration, and effective time management. Most importantly, they reaffirmed my passion for education and my commitment to becoming a teacher who positively impacts students' lives. I am grateful for these challenges and look forward to the opportunities and growth that lie ahead.
