My Academic Challenge by Adam - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My journey through college has been filled with many challenges, but one academic experience stands out as particularly tough. As a sports management major at North Central Texas College, I knew that I would face rigorous courses, but I did not expect the level of difficulty I encountered during my sophomore year.
The challenge began in a course called Sports Finance. I had always been interested in the business side of sports, but the complex financial concepts were hard for me to grasp. The class was fast-paced, and I quickly found myself struggling to keep up with the material. My grades started to slip, and I began to worry about my ability to succeed in my major.
The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on a midterm exam. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to overcome this challenge. The first step I took was to seek help. I reached out to my professor and explained my struggles. He was understanding and offered to meet with me during office hours to go over the concepts I found difficult. This one-on-one time was invaluable, as it allowed me to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the material.
In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with some classmates. This was a game-changer for me. We met regularly to review notes, discuss the lectures, and work through practice problems together. Being part of a group helped me see different perspectives and learn from my peers. It also motivated me to stay on top of the coursework, as I did not want to let my group down.
Another strategy I used was to change my study habits. I realized that my usual method of cramming the night before exams was not effective for this course. Instead, I started to dedicate a little bit of time each day to review the material. I broke down the chapters into manageable sections and made sure to understand each one before moving on. This consistent effort helped me retain the information better and reduced my stress levels as exams approached.
I also took advantage of online resources. I found several educational videos and articles that explained the financial concepts in a way that was easier for me to understand. These resources complemented what I was learning in class and reinforced my understanding.
As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my comprehension and grades. By the time the final exam came around, I felt much more confident in my abilities. I was able to apply the financial concepts to real-world scenarios, which was something I struggled with at the beginning of the course.
Reflecting on this experience, I learned several important lessons. First, I realized the importance of seeking help when needed. There is no shame in admitting that you are struggling and asking for assistance. My professor and classmates were more than willing to support me, and their help was crucial to my success.
Second, I learned the value of collaboration. Working with others not only enhanced my understanding but also made the learning process more enjoyable. I developed strong relationships with my peers, and we continue to support each other in our academic journeys.
Finally, I learned the importance of adapting my study habits to fit the demands of each course. What works for one class may not work for another, and being flexible in my approach allowed me to overcome the challenges I faced.
This experience has made me a stronger student and has prepared me for future challenges in my academic and professional life. I am now better equipped to tackle difficult courses and have more confidence in my ability to succeed in the sports management field.
Overall, the struggle I faced in Sports Finance taught me resilience and the power of perseverance. It was not easy, but overcoming this challenge has made me more determined to achieve my goals. I am grateful for the support I received and for the lessons I learned along the way. As I continue my studies, I will carry these lessons with me and use them to overcome any obstacles that come my way.
