Black History Lives On by Addisen - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

I am one of the only African American minority students in a predominately white school. I have been given many opportunities to stand out. I have not only taught others about black history, but have learned how to represent myself as a proud and independent African American women. Early freshman year, it occurred to me that many of my friends and classmates weren't educated about African American history. They would ask me if certain bits of historical information were true. With the lack of diversity in the community, I knew I needed to do something. A memorable school accomplishment I am most proud of would be raising awareness for black history within my school.

Through presentations, speeches, and friendly propaganda, attention was drawn to the importance of acknowledging and remembering black history. The presentation and speeches were based on historical events that involved African american activists and their contribution to bettering life for all minorities. During the month of February I made and sold custom t-shirts for black history month. The t-shirts were black and the front said, February Black History Month. The back of the shirt said "he had a dream, now it's your turn". My hopes were that, whenever someone wore the shirt, they would take pride in themselves and those who dedicated their lives to making our lives better. It's important for us to acknowledge the sacrifices people made so we never take freedom and individuality for granted. Black history will continue to live on because of my efforts, so for that I am proud.
