Reflection of my high school journey by Addyson - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I reflect on my high school journey, one particular challenge in the classroom stands out. In my junior year, I took on the task of balancing a rigorous course load, which included Advanced Placement classes in English and Psychology. I was excited about the opportunity to dive deeper into subjects I was passionate about, but I underestimated the workload and the level of critical thinking required.

The challenge hit me hardest in my AP English class. Our teacher assigned us a complex novel to analyze, and I struggled to grasp the underlying themes and literary devices. I felt overwhelmed and out of my depth, especially when I saw my classmates contributing insightful comments in discussions. My confidence took a hit, and I started to doubt my abilities.

Instead of giving up, I decided to tackle this challenge head-on. I reached out to my teacher for guidance, and she was incredibly supportive. She suggested breaking down the novel into smaller sections and focusing on one theme at a time. I also formed a study group with a few classmates, where we shared our thoughts and helped each other understand different perspectives. This collaboration not only improved my comprehension but also taught me the value of teamwork and diverse viewpoints.

Through perseverance and support, I gradually gained a better understanding of the material. My grades improved, and I felt more confident participating in class. This experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth. It also reinforced my interest in studying English and Psychology further, as these subjects allow me to explore complex ideas and human behavior.

As I prepare to attend John Carroll University, I am eager to embrace new challenges and continue learning. I know that the skills I developed in overcoming this classroom challenge—resilience, collaboration, and critical thinking—will serve me well in my future studies and beyond.
