How to overcome adversity! by Adeleye - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My journey as a Sports Management major at St John's University has been filled with both exciting opportunities and challenging experiences. One particular academic challenge stands out as a pivotal moment in my college career, shaping not only my approach to my studies but also my perspective on perseverance and resilience.

During my sophomore year, I enrolled in a course called "Sports Economics." I was eager to dive into the subject, knowing how important understanding the economic aspects of sports would be for my future career. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling with the complex concepts and the mathematical components of the course. I had always been more comfortable with the management and strategic aspects of sports, so dealing with intricate economic models and data analysis was a significant hurdle for me.

The first exam was a wake-up call. Despite my efforts, I did not perform as well as I had hoped, and my confidence took a hit. I knew I had to find a way to overcome this challenge, not only to succeed in the course but also to prove to myself that I could tackle difficult subjects outside of my comfort zone.

The first step I took was acknowledging that I needed help. I reached out to my professor, who was incredibly supportive and offered to meet with me during office hours to go over the material I was struggling with. These sessions were invaluable, as they allowed me to ask questions and receive guidance tailored to my understanding.

Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also finding the course challenging. Together, we pooled our resources and knowledge, breaking down complex topics into manageable parts. We met regularly, and the collaborative environment helped me grasp the material more effectively. Explaining concepts to others also reinforced my own understanding.

To further improve my grasp of the subject, I sought out additional resources. I found online tutorials and lectures that explained the economic theories in different ways, which helped solidify my understanding. I also utilized the university's tutoring center, where I worked with a tutor who had a knack for making difficult concepts more accessible.

Balancing my time was another crucial aspect of overcoming this challenge. I created a detailed study schedule, allocating specific times for reviewing course materials, attending study group sessions, and meeting with my professor and tutor. This structured approach helped me manage my workload and reduced the stress of feeling overwhelmed.

Gradually, I began to see improvements. My performance in assignments and subsequent exams reflected my growing understanding of the material. More importantly, I gained confidence in my ability to tackle difficult subjects and developed a deeper appreciation for the diverse aspects of sports management.

This experience taught me the importance of persistence, seeking support, and being proactive in addressing challenges. It also reinforced my belief in the value of collaboration and the power of learning from others. By the end of the semester, not only had I improved my grade in Sports Economics, but I had also gained skills and insights that would benefit me throughout my academic and professional journey.

As a African American male navigating the world of sports management, I am aware of the unique challenges and opportunities that come with my identity. This experience has strengthened my resolve to pursue my passion for sports management with determination and resilience. I am committed to using my education to contribute positively to the sports industry and to advocate for diversity and inclusion within it.

In conclusion, facing and overcoming the challenge of Sports Economics was a transformative experience for me. It taught me the value of perseverance, collaboration, and seeking help when needed. These lessons will undoubtedly guide me as I continue my studies and pursue a career in sports management. I am grateful for the opportunity to grow through this challenge and am confident in my ability to tackle future obstacles with the same determination and resilience.
