Avid the elective students need by Aiden - January 2023 Scholarship Essay
Avid is a program that allows students to prepare for college and life after high-school. Students that have a drive for academic success past high-school should consider applying for the Avid program because it provides them the necessary tools and people to reach out to colleges and universities. I've been in the Avid family for 5 years now, and I absolutely believe that Avid should be a required class for students to take.
I started to take the elective Avid in 7th grade. My 7th grade year just happened to be the first year I got a 4.0 GPA in my life and I had not even gotten close the previous year to achieving an academic goal to this caliber. During that year, I would learn how to take notes and refine notes, which ultimately allowed me to achieve this academic achievement. I am still in Avid to this day and currently have a overall 3.9 GPA, and if it wasn’t for my Avid class I wouldn’t have learned more about life outside of school and how to best make myself stand out to colleges.
If students were required to take Avid as an elective, they would learn how to take notes, how to apply for scholarships, how to reach out to colleges, how to work in groups better, and so much more. I can say from first hand experience that if I wasn’t in Avid I would not be the straight A student I am today, and probably be the all D and C student like I was back in middle school. Avid isn’t just a college prep class, it is my second family. Avid encourages taking breaks and making friends everyday, and even incorporates this into our learning. Avid will allow students to determine the best course to take in life to a certain degree because of all the opportunities Avid provides to their students. Some students might not want to go to college and think Avid is useless, but I know from friends of mine that have no interest in college who are still in Avid who decide to stay because of the people and opportunities.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I can say from my own experiences that if I wasn’t in Avid and I instead listened to counselors and other teachers who told me I couldn't make high-school or get good grades I would not be the student and person I am today. Overall, Avid will allow students to explore who they are and what they want to do with their lives.
