My Challenges by Airen - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout high school, I faced many academic challenges, but one stands out as particularly significant. It was during my junior year in my AP Computer Science class, a subject that I was both passionate about and eager to excel in. The challenge was not just about understanding complex algorithms or programming concepts; it was about overcoming my own self-doubt and learning to ask for help when needed.

The course started off smoothly, and I was excited to dive deeper into coding and software development. However, as the semester progressed, the material became more complex, and I found myself struggling to keep up. The concepts of data structures and object-oriented programming were particularly difficult for me to grasp. I spent countless hours trying to understand these topics, but no matter how much I studied, I felt like I was hitting a wall.

This was a new feeling for me. I had always been a strong student, managing to maintain a high GPA throughout high school. But this time, my usual study methods were not working, and I began to doubt my abilities. I worried that maybe I was not cut out for a future in computer science, a field I had always dreamed of pursuing.

Realizing that I could not solve this problem on my own, I decided to seek help. This was not an easy decision, as I was used to being self-reliant in my studies. However, I knew that if I wanted to succeed, I needed to put aside my pride and reach out. I started by attending extra help sessions with my teacher, who was incredibly supportive and patient. He helped me break down the complex topics into more manageable parts, and slowly, I began to understand.

Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also taking the course. We would meet after school and work through problem sets together. This collaborative environment was incredibly beneficial, as it allowed us to share different perspectives and problem-solving strategies. It also helped me realize that I was not alone in my struggles, which was comforting and motivating.

The turning point came when I finally understood a particularly challenging concept that had been eluding me for weeks. It was as if a light bulb had turned on, and everything started to make sense. This breakthrough gave me the confidence to tackle other difficult topics, and gradually, my grades improved.

This experience taught me several valuable lessons. First, it is okay to ask for help. No one can do everything alone, and seeking assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness. Second, perseverance is key. Even when things seem impossible, pushing through and continuing to put in the effort can lead to success. Lastly, collaboration can be incredibly powerful. Working with others not only helps solve problems but also builds a supportive community.

As I prepare to enter college as a freshman majoring in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, I carry these lessons with me. I know that the road ahead will have its own set of challenges, but I feel better equipped to face them. I am excited to continue learning and growing, both academically and personally. This scholarship would be an invaluable support in my journey, helping me to focus on my studies and achieve my goals. Thank you for considering my application.
