I'm a Coach! by Alex - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
A volunteer opportunity inspired me to make a difference in my community. When I noticed how many younger kids in my town and school district were becomming interested in the sport of lacrosse I was excited. I have played for years and lacrosse has become "my game". I learned the head coach for the younger teams needed assistance, so I decided to step up, play my part and paticipate by coaching.
Asssistant coaching has become a way for me to share my love of lacrosse with my younger friends. I taught young players to catch, throw, pick up ground balls and dodge. Within weeks the kids skills began to improve tremendously and some told me they had been inspired to practice at home. They spoke of wanting to learn more of the games beauty. This was when I started teaching them basics of offensive tactics of lacrosse. The basic understanding can help any young team succeed.
The most important part of my volunteer experience was how these young men not only learned to love the game of lacrosse but we had fun together doing it. It also inspires other local kids to want to play and helps our community come together as one, united, with a common goal...to have fun doing something we love. Volunteer coaching, teaching friends in my community about the game of lacrosse, and sharing the fun of lacrosse has pulled members of our community together and made our family stronger.
