What I strive for. by Alexis - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Alexis Towns, and I am a high school senior with a passion for architecture. As I look forward to studying at Kennesaw State University, I want to share a challenging academic experience that taught me resilience and determination. During my junior year, I faced a particularly tough time in my geometry class. Math has never been my strongest subject, but I was determined to do well because geometry is so important to architecture. I knew I needed to understand shapes, angles, and how they all fit together to create something beautiful and functional. At the beginning of the year, things were going okay, but as the class progressed, I started to struggle with some of the more complex concepts. Proofs and theorems seemed like a foreign language to me. My grades started slipping, and I felt overwhelmed. I was worried that if I could not handle geometry, how would I manage the rigorous demands of an architecture program? I realized I needed to take action before it was too late. First, I sought help from my teacher. I stayed after school to ask questions and get extra practice. My teacher was patient and explained things in different ways until something clicked. In addition to getting help from others. I dedicated extra time each day to practice geometry problems, using online resources and videos to reinforce what I learned in class. Slowly but surely, I started to see improvement. Concepts that once seemed impossible began to make sense. It was not an overnight transformation, but through persistence, I gained confidence in my abilities. One of the biggest lessons I learned from this experience is the importance of asking for help. It is easy to feel embarrassed when you do not understand something, but reaching out for support is a strength, not a weakness. I also learned that setbacks are not the end of the world. They are opportunities to grow and develop new skills.

By the end of the year, my hard work paid off. I managed to bring my grade up and finish the class with a solid understanding of geometry. This experience taught me that I am capable of overcoming academic challenges, and it fueled my passion for architecture even more. I realized that if I could conquer geometry, I could handle whatever challenges come my way in college. This experience also reinforced my interest in architecture. Working through the difficulties of geometry made me appreciate the complexity and beauty of design. I am excited to pursue architecture at Kennesaw State University, where I can apply what I have learned and continue to grow. In conclusion, facing my struggles in geometry taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, seeking help, and the importance of teamwork. These lessons will guide me as I embark on my college journey and pursue my dream of becoming an architect. I am grateful for the challenges I have faced because they have made me stronger and more determined to succeed.
