What is motivating me? by Aliana - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
In the upcoming school year of fall 2025, I will be a freshman in college attending Elmhurst University. By the Lord's grace, the next 4 years of my life will be the most crucial towards my future career. I will be the third person in my family to have dreams of becoming a nurse. My grandmother considered nursing but she never went through with it due to her fear of needles. I have an auntie and cousin that attended college and were able to major in nursing. However, they both ended up becoming pregnant and shifted their focus to their pregnancy instead of going through official nursing school. There’s nothing wrong with that because pregnancy is a lot in itself and the stress that can come with being a nursing student can add on to that. As I come closer to my first day of college it makes me believe even more that God works in mysterious ways. I have high belief that I will be blessed to become the first person to obtain a nursing degree. This will be one of the reasons for me to stay focused on my goal because I will keep the ladies in my family in mind as a reminder during my journey. I’ve always had a heart that was attracted to not only being a blessing to give but also care for others. I understand that going towards a future in nursing will come with its ups and downs at times including stress, procrastination, fear, sometimes even doubt. I’ve grown up to know that anything is possible when keeping God first. A goal that I have for the upcoming school year is to continue bettering my relationship with him. As I’m blessed to see the upcoming days I know that his guidance will overcome the natural human emotions that will prevent me from becoming overwhelmed during school. I serve a faithful and loving God that I know will be with me through every step. Over the summer I have been building my relationship with him. Another goal for the upcoming school year includes exceeding better academically than what I did during my years in high school. I have always been an A and B student, sometimes even C’s but in this next chapter in my life I’m not settling for the bare minimum. I’ve always admired those who ended up in the top 10% of their class among hundreds, even thousands of other people. I’ve never pushed myself as hard to become one of those people but there’s a particular time being for every point of your life. During my first year I plan to find groups where I will be able to take part in studying the material as well as getting all the resources that are needed from my professors.
I will also hold myself accountable to find the study methods that support me the best. While education is important, there also needs to be a balance between work, life, and school. Burnout is a real thing that can happen and I don’t ever want it to get to that point. I’ve always been an introverted person and mostly a homebody for the most part of my life. These past months have been the most I’ve grown in terms of allowing myself to experience my summer before I enter the next chapter in my life. I’m a person that is okay with enjoying my own company every once in a while. It allows me to engage in my preferred activities without the opinion of another. However, I believe in college I will meet some of my life-long friends. Which is another aspiration I have to push myself out of my comfort zone; building bonds with other people while keeping my respect and morals I have for myself. Though it can be easy to end up caught up with going out and becoming distracted from school. This is why it’ll be important for me to set proper boundaries with others, to keep myself regulated and focused on the things most important to me.
