Growing up, I always believed that teaching was my calling. I have always been drawn to the idea of helping others learn and grow, so when I started my freshman year at Rowan University as an Education major, I was excited to begin this new chapter. However, I quickly realized that college was a different world compared to high school. The transition was not as smooth as I had hoped, and I faced some academic challenges that tested my resolve.
One of the most challenging academic experiences I encountered was during my first semester in a course called "Foundations of Education." The course was crucial for my major, and I was eager to do well. However, I soon found myself struggling to keep up with the workload and the expectations. The class required a lot of reading, writing, and critical thinking, which was more demanding than what I was used to in high school.
The first few weeks were overwhelming. I felt lost during lectures, and my grades on the initial assignments were not what I had hoped for. I started doubting my abilities and wondered if I had made the right choice in pursuing a career in education. My confidence took a hit, and I knew I had to find a way to overcome these challenges if I wanted to succeed.
The turning point came when I received feedback on my first major paper. My professor pointed out areas where I could improve, but also encouraged me by highlighting the potential she saw in my work. Her feedback made me realize that I needed to change my approach to studying and managing my time. I could not continue with the same methods I used in high school; I needed to adapt to the demands of college-level coursework.
I decided to take a proactive approach to improve my academic performance. First, I organized a study schedule that allowed me to dedicate specific times for reading, writing, and reviewing class materials. This helped me manage my time more effectively and ensured that I was not cramming at the last minute. I also started attending office hours regularly. Meeting with my professor one-on-one gave me the opportunity to ask questions and get clarification on topics I found difficult. Her guidance was invaluable, and it helped me gain a deeper understanding of the course material.
Additionally, I formed a study group with some of my classmates. We met weekly to discuss readings, share insights, and help each other with assignments. This collaborative environment not only made studying more enjoyable but also allowed me to learn from my peers and gain different perspectives on the topics we were studying. Being part of a supportive group made a significant difference in my learning experience.
Another strategy I adopted was utilizing the resources available on campus, such as the writing center. I sought help to improve my writing skills, which were crucial for my major. The tutors at the writing center provided me with valuable feedback on my papers, helping me refine my arguments and improve my clarity and coherence.
Through these efforts, I gradually saw improvements in my grades and my understanding of the course material. By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the course but also gained confidence in my ability to handle college-level work. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and seeking help when needed.
Reflecting on this challenging academic experience, I realize that it was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It taught me that facing challenges is a part of the learning process and that overcoming them is possible with the right mindset and strategies. I learned the value of hard work, time management, and the importance of utilizing available resources. Most importantly, I discovered that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a step towards growth and improvement.
As I continue my studies in education, I carry these lessons with me. They have strengthened my resolve to become a teacher who not only imparts knowledge but also supports and encourages students to overcome their own challenges. I am grateful for the experience, as it has made me a stronger and more resilient student, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead in my academic and professional journey.
