Overcoming whatever is thrown my way by Allison - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school career, I have faced several academic challenges, but one stands out as the most significant. It was during my junior year in my Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus class. Math has always been a subject I enjoyed, but AP Calculus was on a whole new level of difficulty. The concepts were complex, and the pace of the class was fast. I found myself struggling to keep up with the material, and my grades were not where I wanted them to be. This was a new and daunting experience for me, as I had always been able to grasp math concepts relatively easily.

The challenge began to weigh heavily on me. I remember feeling overwhelmed and anxious, especially as exams approached. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed in the class. The first step I took was to acknowledge that I needed help. This was not easy for me, as I had always taken pride in being able to handle my schoolwork independently. However, I knew that asking for help was not a sign of weakness but a step toward improvement.

I started attending after-school tutoring sessions that my teacher offered. These sessions were incredibly helpful because they allowed me to ask questions in a smaller, more focused setting. My teacher was patient and understanding, often going over concepts multiple times until I felt comfortable with them. I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met twice a week to review the material together, work through difficult problems, and support each other. This collaborative learning environment was beneficial, as it provided different perspectives and problem-solving approaches. We would often tackle problems from our homework assignments and practice tests, discussing various methods to find solutions. This not only helped me understand the material better but also made learning more enjoyable.

In addition to seeking external help, I had to make changes in my study habits. I began dedicating more time to reviewing my notes after each class and completing additional practice problems. I set a regular study schedule, making sure to allocate time each day specifically for calculus. I also made use of online resources, such as educational videos and forums, which provided explanations and examples that complemented what I was learning in class. Websites like Khan Academy and online math forums became invaluable resources for me. This extra effort outside of class was crucial in helping me understand the material more deeply.

One of the most important lessons I learned from this experience was the value of perseverance. There were times when I felt like giving up, but I reminded myself of my goals and why I was taking the class in the first place. I wanted to challenge myself and prepare for college-level coursework, especially since I plan to major in accounting at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania-Lock Haven. I knew that a strong foundation in math would be essential for my future studies and career. My interest in accounting drives me to understand numbers and their applications thoroughly, and calculus was a step in that direction.

By the end of the semester, my hard work began to pay off. I saw a significant improvement in my grades, and I felt more confident in my abilities. I was proud of how far I had come and grateful for the support I received from my teacher and classmates. This experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth, and overcoming them requires dedication, support, and a willingness to adapt. It also taught me that it is okay to struggle and that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.

Looking back, I am thankful for the struggle I faced in AP Calculus. It taught me valuable skills that I will carry with me into college and beyond. I learned how to manage my time effectively, seek help when needed, and collaborate with others to achieve a common goal. These skills will undoubtedly be beneficial as I pursue my accounting degree and eventually enter the workforce. The experience also reinforced my belief in the importance of persistence and adaptability, qualities that are essential in any field.

In conclusion, facing a challenging academic experience in high school was a pivotal moment in my educational journey. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to develop strategies to overcome obstacles.
