A struggle in my academic journey by Amber - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I think back on my academic journey, one challenge stands out like a mountain I had to climb. It was during my junior year of high school when I faced a particularly tough time in my IB Biology class. I have always had a strong interest in biology, especially since I plan to major in Animal Sciences and pursue a career in veterinary medicine. However, this class tested me in ways I had never experienced before.

The challenge began with the sheer volume of information. The pace was fast, and the material was dense. I remember sitting in class, feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of cellular processes and genetic codes. My grades started slipping, and I felt my confidence waver. It was frustrating because I had always done well in science, and this was the first time I felt like I was struggling to keep up.

I realized I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step was to acknowledge that I needed help. This was not easy for me, as I had always prided myself on being independent in my studies. I decided to reach out to my teacher, Mrs. Thompson, who was incredibly supportive. She helped me understand that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a step toward growth. We arranged for extra help sessions after school, where she patiently explained concepts that I found difficult.

Another strategy I adopted was forming a study group with a few classmates. We met twice a week to review material, quiz each other, and discuss difficult topics. This collaborative environment made a huge difference. Explaining concepts to others helped reinforce my understanding, and hearing different perspectives often clarified things that seemed confusing when I studied alone.

I also had to improve my time management skills. Balancing homework, extracurricular activities, and my part-time job was a juggling act. I started using a planner to organize my tasks and set aside specific times for studying biology. Breaking down the material into manageable chunks made it less daunting and more achievable. I found that consistency was key, so I made sure to review my notes daily rather than cramming before exams.

Despite these efforts, there were still moments of doubt. I remember one particular test that I had studied hard for, only to receive a grade that was lower than I had hoped. It was disheartening, but I tried to see it as an opportunity to learn from my mistakes. I went over the test with Mrs. Thompson to understand where I went wrong, which helped me identify areas that needed more focus.

Through perseverance and a willingness to adapt, I gradually improved. By the end of the semester, my grades reflected the hard work I had put in, and more importantly, I regained my confidence. This experience taught me valuable lessons about resilience and the importance of seeking support when needed. It also reinforced my passion for biology and my determination to pursue a career in the field of animal sciences.

Looking back, I am grateful for this challenging experience. It prepared me for the demands of college and the rigorous coursework I will encounter as I work toward my goal of becoming a veterinarian. I know there will be more challenges ahead, but I feel equipped to handle them with the skills I developed during this time.
