Why I want to study Psychology. by Anahi - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
Psychology, "the the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context". I've been interested in the mind of humans from a young age. First 48; that's how my love for psychology started. What prompted these cases, these investigations? What made the person behind these crimes so angry, so sad, so upset? Watching Crime documentaries is how the study of psychology furthered my interest. The John Wayne Gacy Tapes and Ted Bundy Tapes on Netflix were the first prescriptions that got me addicted. Why did they do it? Why did they go out of their way to do these things to people? Why did it satisfy them?
Psychology also teaches one to communicate with others better. Learning and categorizing a person's behavior and mannerisms, can also help you to understand them better. Psychology allows an understanding across bridges that you never thought to cross. It helps you to sympathize or to approach someone with certain cautions depending on how they act. Psychology can help you understand people that may not even be able to understand themselves, which sounds like a superhero to me. So, coming from a family that doesn't know how to communicate at all, this skill will come in handy.
As I condemn my family for their "anti-communication", I have to hold myself accountable as well. As a person of anger issues and an attitude princess, I've tried to find means to communicate with others without resorting to yelling. True, psychology helps you understand others, it also helps you understand yourself. Psychology allows you learn was to become effective in conversations without resorting to temper tantrums. To me, this sounds like a great scapegoat from bad habits.
Psychology is a spectrum of different learning area which all seem very interesting and helpful to me. I think psychology is one of those majors that allows you to help others while also helping yourself. This is why I'm choosing psychology as a major I want to study.
