Essay by Anais - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
When I first entered Piedmont University as a freshman majoring in a healthcare-related field, I was filled with excitement and determination to make the most of my college experience. However, I soon encountered a challenging academic experience that tested my resolve and shaped my approach to learning in ways I had not anticipated. This experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of seeking support, which are lessons I carry with me today.
During my first semester, I enrolled in a demanding anatomy and physiology course. I knew it would be tough, but I was not prepared for the level of detail and the sheer volume of information presented in each class. The lectures were dense, and I struggled to keep up with the fast pace. Each week, we were expected to memorize complex terms and processes, and I found myself overwhelmed by the amount of material I needed to learn in such a short period.
Despite my efforts, my first few quizzes did not go well. I felt discouraged and began to doubt my abilities, questioning whether I was cut out for such a rigorous field of study. I had always been a high-achieving student, maintaining a 3.97 GPA in high school, so this was a new and unsettling experience for me. I realized that my usual study habits, which had served me well in the past, were not enough to succeed in this course. I needed to find a new approach and quickly.
The turning point came when I decided to seek help rather than continue struggling on my own. I reached out to my professor during office hours and explained my struggles in detail. She was understanding and offered valuable advice on how to tackle the material more effectively. She suggested breaking down the content into smaller, manageable sections and using visual aids like diagrams and flashcards to reinforce my understanding. This advice was a game-changer for me.
In addition to my professor's guidance, I joined a study group with some classmates who were also finding the course challenging. We met regularly to review the material, quiz each other, and share study tips and resources. This collaborative environment helped me see the material from different perspectives and filled in gaps in my understanding. It also made the learning process more enjoyable and less isolating, as I realized I was not alone in my struggles.
I also took advantage of online resources, such as educational videos, interactive quizzes, and forums, to supplement my learning. These tools allowed me to study at my own pace and revisit challenging topics as needed. By diversifying my study methods, I was able to reinforce my knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my performance. My quiz scores steadily increased, and I felt more confident in my ability to grasp complex concepts. The hard work and dedication paid off when I received a high grade on the final exam, a moment that felt incredibly rewarding. This experience taught me that perseverance and adaptability are key to overcoming academic challenges, and it reinforced my belief in my ability to succeed in my chosen field.
Reflecting on this experience, I realize that it was not just about improving my grades. It was about learning how to navigate difficulties and develop strategies to overcome them effectively. I learned the importance of seeking help when needed and the value of collaboration and resourcefulness in my studies. These are lessons that extend beyond the classroom and into every aspect of life.
This challenging academic experience has prepared me for future obstacles in my education and career. As I continue my studies in the healthcare field, I am confident that the skills I have developed will serve me well. I am committed to applying these lessons to future challenges and using them to achieve my academic and professional goals. I understand that the road ahead will not always be easy, but I am ready to face whatever comes my way with the tools and mindset I have gained.
In conclusion, facing a challenging academic experience in my anatomy and physiology course taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of seeking support. By reaching out for help, collaborating with peers, and diversifying my study methods, I was able to overcome this challenge and emerge stronger. This experience has not only strengthened my academic skills but also prepared me for future challenges in my education and career. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and look forward to applying them as I continue my journey in the healthcare field, knowing that I have the strength and determination to succeed.
