Overcoming undesirable circumstances by Andy - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My first year of high school I came back from online learning for one and a half year, I had to readjust to talking to people in person and needing to get prepared every morning to head to school. The first week of school I didn’t talk to anyone or teachers and felt distant from everyone. I came to school completed my work and study what I needed to understand for my classes. My favorite subject was math and enjoyed learning from my math teacher during this time unfortunately this didn’t last for long. Our math teacher due to unforeseen events had to leave the school and this resulted in all the freshman in our grade not having a math teacher. This was problematic because we needed to learn how to do math for our end of year state value exam on our math skills (keystone). Some students enjoyed not having teacher since it allowed free time to do whatever we wanted, but I chose to study without the help of a teacher because math is a subject I really enjoy learning and didn’t want fall. Everyday I would look up a video of the subject or go khan academy to learn something everyday. I would write down everything in math notebook so I wouldn’t forget it. This led to me being one of the two students passing the test at the end of the year out of our freshman. This taught me that self education is just as important as learning in class.
