O2: Overcoming Obstacles by angel - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a college freshman at Georgia State University, majoring in Biology, I have already encountered a few challenges that have tested my determination and resilience. One of the most significant academic challenges I faced was during my first semester in college, when I took an introductory biology course that was much more demanding than I had anticipated. This experience taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, time management, and the importance of seeking help when needed.

Coming from high school with a 3.7 GPA, I considered myself a diligent student. However, the transition to college-level coursework was more difficult than I had expected. In high school, I was able to manage my time effectively and balance my studies with extracurricular activities. But in college, the pace was faster, and the material was more complex. The biology course, in particular, was challenging because it required a deep understanding of intricate concepts and the ability to apply them in various scenarios.

I remember the first few weeks of the semester being particularly overwhelming. The lectures were dense with information, and the textbook seemed to be written in a language I had not yet learned. I quickly realized that my usual study habits were not sufficient. I found myself struggling to keep up with the coursework, and my confidence started to waver. I was worried that I might not be able to handle the demands of a biology major.

Determined not to give up, I decided to take a step back and reassess my approach. I knew that I needed to develop new strategies to succeed in this challenging environment. The first thing I did was to create a detailed study schedule. I broke down the material into manageable sections and allocated specific times each day to review my notes, read the textbook, and complete assignments. This helped me stay organized and ensured that I was consistently engaging with the material.

In addition to improving my time management, I also sought out additional resources to enhance my understanding of the subject. I began attending study groups organized by my classmates, where we would discuss difficult concepts and quiz each other. These sessions were incredibly helpful because they provided a different perspective on the material and allowed me to learn from my peers. I also made use of online resources, such as educational videos and interactive quizzes, to reinforce my learning.

One of the most important steps I took was to reach out for help when I needed it. I realized that there was no shame in asking for assistance, and that seeking help was a sign of strength, not weakness. I started attending my professor's office hours regularly to ask questions and clarify any doubts I had. My professor was supportive and offered valuable insights that helped me grasp the material more effectively. I also utilized the tutoring services offered by the university, which provided additional guidance and support.

Through these efforts, I gradually began to see improvement in my performance. I became more confident in my ability to understand and apply the concepts I was learning. By the end of the semester, I had not only managed to pass the course, but I had also developed a deeper appreciation for the subject and a stronger sense of self-confidence.

This challenging experience taught me several important lessons that I will carry with me throughout my academic journey. I learned the value of perseverance and the importance of adapting to new situations. I also realized the significance of seeking help and utilizing available resources. Most importantly, I discovered that challenges are opportunities for growth and that overcoming them can lead to a greater sense of accomplishment.

As a Black woman in the field of biology, I am motivated to continue striving for excellence and to contribute to the diversity and advancement of the scientific community. This experience has strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in biology and to make a positive impact in the world. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and am excited to continue my journey at Georgia State University, equipped with the skills and determination to overcome any challenges that may come my way.
