The Fight For Equality by Angely - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

In recent years, the fight for equality has proven to have grown as more groups of people raise awareness for equality. If I could have dinner with any historical figure, it would be Martin Luther King Jr. because of his contribution to this nation's civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. led an inspiring and extraordinary life that encouraged many to join the fight for equality. From his inspiring, historic speech to his unfortunate death, Martin Luther King Jr.’s impact on the entire nation helped build the foundation of a better life for minorities in the U.S.

In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for jobs and freedom. This powerful speech based on the injustices that black men at the time had endured motivated and inspired many people. I believe that there is so much to learn from this inspiring historic figure. As a future political science major, I respect Martin Luther King Jr and all he has done to contribute to the success of the U.S. civil rights movement.

Shortly after his historic speech, Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his nonviolent advocacy towards racial injustice. I feel that his nonviolent approach is an example that should be followed today by activists fighting for their rights. As a racial minority in the U.S., I would be honored to conversate and get to know such an important historical figure.

Martin Luther King Jr. has had an important impact on the United States. His inspiring speech and nonviolent advocacy are inspiring to me because I, like him, am a racial minority. I believe that Martin Luther King Jr. would be proud of what his impact has caused and I would love to get to know more about him.
