Empowered by Mentorship: How Representation and Guidance Shaped My Passion for Science by Aniya - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to have encountered individuals who have shaped my path and aspirations. Among these influential figures, two professors stand out as pivotal mentors who have instilled a passion for science that drives me to this day. My amazing microbiology professor, Dr. Breonna Martin, and influential biology professor, Dr. Catherine Benson. Their ability to connect to their students and professionalism have made them both role models and pure sources of inspiration.
Dr. Martin became a role model from day one; the way she conducted her class with unparalleled professionalism, grace, and intelligence impressed me. Every lecture was meticulously organized, a trait gained from her vast experience in a laboratory setting. Her approach to teaching was nothing less than transformative. Her ability to clearly explain complex concepts with an understanding tone, ensuring that the topics were accessible to each student. She took time to demonstrate each test, making sure to explain each step and its importance, analyzing common pitfalls, and offering encouragement to those who struggled. She conducted the class with a clear message: failure was not the end but a steppingstone to growth and understanding. She encouraged those who failed to try again, instilling resilience into all of her students. Her ability to balance empathy with high expectations created an environment where we, as her students, felt both challenged and supported—a rare combo.
Witnessing Dr. Martin excel as a highly regarded Black professional in a male-dominated field was profoundly impactful for me as a young Black woman. It’s inspiring to see someone who looked like me thriving in such a prestigious area. Her success alone caused me to fall in love with microbiology and encouraged me to break barriers in fields that I once thought were out of my reach.
While Dr. Martin piqued my interest in microbiology, Dr. Catherine Benson expanded my aspirations. Her enthusiasm for conservation biology and vivid stories of fieldwork for various research projects ignited my curiosity and painted a picture of a potential career filled with discovery, adventure, and meaningful research. Dr. Benson’s positive outlook on life was infectious, and her unwavering belief in her students’ potential encouraged me to fearlessly pursue my dreams.
My most favorable lesson in Dr. Benson’s class was on phylogeny. Her description, not just of the concept but also all of the details and procedures required for this field of study, was presented with such clarity and passion that I found myself captivated by the idea of one day expanding the phylogenetic tree myself. It was more than just a scientific goal; but a personal aspiration and a symbol of my success in contributing meaningful research to the world. Dr. Benson’s mentorship inspired me to consider pursuing my PhD, not only for the immense opportunities for independent research but also for the chance to make a lasting impact in my filed.
Together, Dr. Martin and Dr. Benson shaped my decision to pursue a career in medical laboratory science. A career that fulfils my passion for all things micro, gives me the knowledge necessary to feel confident in the lab setting, and allows the chance to help those in need.
The impact of these mentors extends far beyond the classroom. They have shown me what is possible when resilience, determination, passion, and intelligence converge. Most importantly, they have instilled the belief that I can make a difference; whether through teaching, research, or contributions to the advancement of science. In a world where representation, the influence of these remarkable women is a testament to the power of mentorship. Their guidance solely shaped my academic journey and transformed my perspective on what is possible. I vow to carry their lessons as I continue my journey in the field of science.
