The Accomplishments That Helped Me Find My Calling by Annabel - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

A school accomplishment I am most proud of is that I got certified in sports medicine, got ServSafe certified, and became a certified nursing assistant before I graduated high school. At my high school, each student had to choose a career pathway that we had to accomplish before he or she graduated high school. I finished the three pathways that I had interest in: nursing, sports medicine, and nutrition.
To finish my nutrition pathway and get my ServSafe certification, my class went over the textbook for the ServSafe class then I was sent to on one the three elementary schools in my hometown to get a more hands on experience of the information we learned from the textbook. I chose this particular elementary school because this is the elementary school I went to and I wanted to see some of the teachers that I have not seen in a while. While I was there, I helped the lunch ladies any way I can. I learned what to do and what not to do in the kitchen from how to keep food from cross contaminating to how to portion food. I also learned that the lunch ladies do not get enough credit for all they do in the kitchen for the kids. After going to the elementary school a few times a week for a few months, I took the ServSafe test and passed.
The sports medicine pathway was new to my high school and with me wanting to go into the medical field, I thought this was a great opportunity to find out if this is something I wanted to do because I am not sure what I want to do in the medical field. I had a lot of fun in this class. From learning simple things like how to make ice bags to taping ankles and thumbs was so interesting to me. I am going to be honest: the test to get certified was super tough but I fortunately passed.
I believe I did the most hands-on stuff in the nursing pathway than I did with the other two pathways combined. At my high school, there was a separate room where there were life size dolls who played the role of the patient. I practiced skills like how to help patients get out of bed, how to feed them, how to bathe them, and more. After proving that we are proficient in those skills, we went to the nursing home everyday for an hour a day for a few months. We also had to work in the nursing home for 8 hours a day for 2 days. At the nursing home, I went from room to room helping the residents. I changed their diapers, showered them, helped walk them to their restrooms, fed them, etc. After a few moths practicing out skills at the nursing home, I took my test, mad my skills assessed, and passed.
