Chasing my goals and dreams while staying in the workforce is a challenge. I am not your average young, fresh, wide eyed student just leaving the nest to explore. I have a career, family, and responsibilities prior to pursuing my college degree.
I am furthering my current career as a speech and language assistant to become a special education teacher through Valley City State University online campus. I work in my communities school district, support my 17 year old son, and attend my college courses in the evenings and on weekends.
My challenge is to devote enough time to my courses and studying and to my son’s needs. I don’t want him to feel like he isn’t an important part of my life while I am pursuing this degree. To accomplish this task I have asked for help from my family in daily routine activities, this way I have more time to spend with the current priority. It is hard not to feel like a burden when asking for help with something you are capable of doing, like making dinner, or cleaning. I have to keep in mind that this is only temporary and soon I will be able to repay those who have sacrificed their time for me.
