My Future Major by Ansley - May 2023 Scholarship Essay
I aspire to major in chemistry once in college. Although my mind has changed throughout my many years of school. From wanting to be a veterinarian, to a neurosurgeon, and even a tattoo artist. My mind has never just been set on one thing for my future. I love helping and caring for people, yet I flourish in my science classes. I had soon enough found that my passion is chemistry. I have developed my passion for science throughout my years of high school. There are many things that had struck my interest, including: my grandpa's passing, enjoying the classes I have taken, and thinking about careers after college.
The first massive thing that altered my mind to major in chemistry was my grandfather passing away. This happened during my first year of high school. He died of lung cancer, and his passing had affected me a great amount. From that point forward I knew I had wanted to go into a science field. Although I did not know a great amount about chemistry, all I knew was it is hard, and many people did not like it. I wanted to get into cancer research, so I could help people like my grandpa. Now that I am older, I understand that majoring in chemistry will give me the ability to connect with patients depending on the career I choose after college. Chemistry will let me create medications, learn chemical compounds, which can ultimately help many people who are like my grandpa.
Then, moving forward in my high school career, I decided to take pre-AICE chemistry my sophomore year. This was just a more rigorous class rather than taking regular chemistry. There was more pressure to learn and understand the material so you could perform well. To start the year, chemistry was challenging; math was challenging. But I loved the material and worked hard to learn all the work. There were countless nights where I stayed up late, trying to find any way to understand the math. Then, it finally clicked. Math got a lot easier, and I excelled in the class. This class boosted my confidence and is one of the main reasons I will major in chemistry.
Continuing, as I had mentioned before, my mind has never been set on one career. So, I imagine many different jobs for myself after college. I have combined both my love for chemistry and my love for helping people into one major. I have decided that chemistry will broaden my horizon on what I do in the future. There are many different careers that I can go into to help people including cancer research, clinical pharmacy, as well as a toxicologist. My point being, that there are so many opportunities for myself if I major in chemistry that will fit all my wants and needs.
All in all, I have decided to major in chemistry because it combines my love of science along with my passion to help and care for others. Majoring in chemistry will also help satisfy my idea that I will not just have one career after, and since chemistry will always be needed, the jobs should be endless. Inspiration for this major includes my grandfather passing away, my first chemistry class, and thinking about all my career choices afterwards. All of these have altered my life in a huge way, and for that I am grateful because I have found my passion and that is chemistry. That is why I want to major in chemistry.
