Best Advice for Teachers by Antonia - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

Personally, the most important advice I would give to my teacher to help me learn would be to be completely engaged in what course they are teaching. All teachers should be excited about teaching and eager to share their knowledge with enthusiasm about the certain subject they teach. It makes a difference to me if my teacher genuinely cares about me personally as well as about my grade in their class. Talking with and getting to know your students on a personal level makes them feel important and appreciated.

Being a teacher is a calling, not just a job. It is very hard to relate to so many different students during each day, so to truly care about what is being taught makes a student want to learn. My favorite teachers that I have had in high school are engaged with the class of students and relate to them as well. They genuinely seem interested in school activities, and find absolute importance in what they teach and contribute. I believe the greatest connections with a teacher and a student come by mutual respect.

Fun and creative approaches, and interactive activities along with experiential discussions are good ways to teach, but without an engaged teacher who can lead the class with confidence, the learning gets boring. When teachers can find the importance in what they are teaching, so that it actually applies to a student's life, learning is definitely more easy and exciting!
