Road to Becoming a Physician with Biochemistry by Ariyana - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I plan on majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I chose this because I wanted a major that would allow me to have the prerequisites for medical school, but also allow me to have room for interpretation for any future careers I may pursue related to human biology but not necessarily healthcare-related or laboratory-related.

Reading the description of this major helped me with a dilemma I had. It was between choosing Biology or Chemistry as my major. I wanted Biology to know more about the human body system but I did not want to learn too much about plants because my goal is to become a physician for children. I also wanted to study Chemistry since I liked it back in the tenth grade, but I did not want to become a chemist. This major was specifically for those who wanted to focus on both areas and be able to look at real-world problems.

A major benefit of this major is the internship opportunities and independent research with a small group or solo to deepen understanding. This is something I could find in other majors, but they did not have the added benefit of focusing on Biochemistry.

I plan on becoming a pediatric physician and I want to have a strong foundation in different science topics before diving deeper into more complex ideas and procedures.
