Struggles of college algebra by Ashanti - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Ashanti Burley, and I am a senior in high school, eager to attend Kennesaw State University to pursue a major in Nursing. Throughout my academic journey, I have faced various challenges, but none quite as daunting as my experience with college algebra. This particular class tested my patience and resilience, but it also taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of seeking help.

Math has never been my strong suit. Even as a child, I found myself struggling with numbers and equations. So, when I enrolled in college algebra, I knew it would be a challenge. However, I was not prepared for just how overwhelming it would become. The pace of the class was fast, and the concepts were difficult to grasp. I felt lost and stressed, unable to find effective ways to study and keep up with the material.

Despite my efforts to understand the coursework, my struggles only intensified. I spent countless hours trying to solve problems and make sense of the concepts, but it was like trying to piece together a puzzle with missing pieces. My anxiety grew, and I started to doubt my abilities. Eventually, I reached a breaking point and made the difficult decision to withdraw from the class.

Withdrawing from college algebra felt like a setback, but it also served as a turning point. I realized that I needed to approach the subject differently if I wanted to succeed. It was clear that I could not tackle this challenge alone, so I decided to seek help. I began working with a tutor every Tuesday, and this decision has made a world of difference.

My tutor has been incredibly patient and supportive, helping me break down complex concepts into manageable parts. With their guidance, I have discovered new study techniques that work for me, such as practicing problems in smaller chunks and using visual aids to understand equations. This personalized approach has been a game-changer, and I am finally starting to grasp the material that once seemed impossible.

Studying with a tutor has not only improved my understanding of algebra but also boosted my confidence. I no longer feel overwhelmed or defeated. Instead, I am motivated and optimistic about retaking the class. I am determined to pass college algebra, knowing that I now have the tools and support I need to succeed.

This experience has taught me that it is okay to struggle and that seeking help is a crucial step in overcoming challenges. It has also reinforced the importance of persistence and finding strategies that work for me. As I prepare to retake college algebra, I am confident that I will approach it with a renewed sense of determination and resilience.

Looking ahead to my studies at Kennesaw State University, I know that there will be more challenges to face, especially in a demanding field like nursing. However, my experience with college algebra has equipped me with the skills and mindset needed to tackle these obstacles head-on. I am ready to embrace the challenges of college with an open mind and a willingness to seek help when needed.

In conclusion, my struggle with college algebra was a significant academic challenge, but it was also an invaluable learning experience. It taught me the power of perseverance, the importance of seeking help, and the effectiveness of personalized study strategies. These lessons have not only prepared me for future academic challenges but also strengthened my resolve to succeed in my chosen field. I am grateful for the experience and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
