My Wake Up Call by Ashley - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
At the start of my high school journey, academics were not my top priority. Up until the end of my first semester as a sophomore, I had always barely floated above failing. I did not think much about my future or the impact my grades could have on it. My focus was elsewhere, and I did not realize that I was setting myself up for disappointment. This all changed when I failed a couple of classes that semester. It was a wake-up call that I desperately needed.
Seeing those failing grades was incredibly disappointing. I felt like I had let myself down, and the disappointment from my parents and coaches was palpable. It was a tough moment, but it was also a turning point. I realized that if I wanted to have a successful future, I had to make a change. I could no longer coast through school without putting in the effort. I needed to take responsibility for my education and my future.
From that moment on, I dedicated myself to improving my grades. I made a conscious decision to prioritize my academics and work hard to make everyone proud of me, including myself. I started by setting specific goals for each of my classes and creating a study schedule that allowed me to manage my time effectively. I also sought help from my teachers, who were more than willing to provide guidance and support. They helped me understand the material I was struggling with and offered strategies to improve my study habits.
One of the most effective strategies I adopted was making flashcards for every single test. I found that creating flashcards helped me break down complex information into manageable chunks. I would spend time diligently studying these flashcards, ensuring that I was well-prepared and confident going into each test. This method not only helped me retain information better but also reduced my anxiety during exams.
In addition to these changes, I started to take better care of myself. I realized that my academic performance was closely tied to my overall well-being. I made sure to get enough sleep, eat healthily, and find time for physical activity. These lifestyle changes had a positive impact on my energy levels and my ability to focus in class.
The results of my efforts were incredible. Since making these changes, I have maintained an A average, something I never thought possible before. My grades improved significantly, and with each success, my confidence grew. I felt proud of myself for turning things around and proving to myself that I could achieve more than I had ever imagined.
This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and self-discipline. It showed me that with determination and the right support, I could overcome any academic challenge. I learned to value my education and understand the role it plays in shaping my future. It also made me realize the importance of setting goals and working diligently to achieve them.
As I look forward to attending Idaho State University and majoring in biology, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. I know that college will present its own set of challenges, but I am confident that the skills and mindset I developed during high school will serve me well. I am eager to learn from experienced professors and collaborate with peers who share my passion for biology.
In conclusion, the academic challenges I faced during my sophomore year were a critical turning point in my life. They taught me valuable lessons about responsibility, hard work, and the power of believing in myself. Overcoming these challenges not only improved my grades but also reinforced my commitment to pursuing a successful future. I am grateful for the support of my teachers, family, and friends, and I am proud of the progress I have made. I look forward to continuing my education at Idaho State University, where I am determined to make the most of every opportunity to learn and grow.
