private school by Asianae - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
In the 6th grade, I made the transition from public school to private school. With no idea what to expect, I went into it with an open mind. Not only was I going to have to make new friends, but no one there looked like me. I was a minority in a new totally environment. I had to find my way socially and academically. The transition from elementary school to middle school can be a tough one. A whole new set up and format to your school experience. My private school, Athens Christian School, was academically more challenging than the public school I had previously attended, and the other public schools in my area.
I struggled mentally. Keeping up with students who were already accustomed to the curriculum was discouraging for me. The feeling of being behind kept me in a mindset that I had to stay behind. I had never been challenged in this way. Never had assignments of that caliber. My memorization skills were tested, as we would have bible verse quizzes with 5-8 verses to remember at a time. As a soft spoken introvert, I was scared to ask for help.
After coming to the realization that those who succeed are the ones that aren't afraid to ask for help, I started to preform better. I realized I had to make some adjustments to the way I approached my school work. I found tools and resources to help me get to where I needed to be.
I signed up for the resources program and received tutoring services, and extended time on tests and quizzes. I also implemented better studying habits at home. For example, I made myself use flashcards for memorization. The difference the combination of these two things made was miraculous.
Asking for help, and stepping outside of my comfort zone Made all the difference. Realizing the teachers jobs is to help me, and that I cant progress or get anywhere without notifying people I genuinely needed help.
