A Volunteer Opportunity that Inspired me to make a Difference in the Community by Austin - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
I was inspired to make a difference in my community when I became a boy scout 12 years ago in Kindergarten. I began my journey as a cub scout in Kindergarten. As I progressed throughout all my school years I became very interested in helping others in the community. I volunteered for various projects in boy scouts to help the community. I planted flowers for veterans on Memorial Day, raked lawns for elders, picked up trash in the community, collected canned goods for food shelters, rang bells for the Salvation Army, cleared brush on trails at the Rod & Gun Club, and made birdhouses for a park.
As I grew older in boy scouts I was inspired to continue my volunteering opportunity at the next level. I wanted to become an Eagle Scout, which is the highest level of boy scouting you can achieve. So I made a plan by developing a project to help the community. I built observatory signs and stations at a State Park where visitors can stop and utilize these signs with telescopes in the park. They can see various types of stars and enjoy the information signs I created for these stations for them to learn from. With the help from some fellow scouts and my family and relatives the observatory signs are now available to all visitors and I feel that all the hard work that was put into this project to complete it was well worth it for everyone to use now when they are visiting this State Park. Being a Boy Scout to an Eagle Scout inspired me to volunteer in the community to make it a better place to live.
