Constructive Feedback by Avery - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

Changing studios and learning under new teachers was a life-changing experience that reignited my love for dance and helped me overcome the burnout I once faced. As someone who had danced competitively for years, I had reached a point where the joy of movement and creation was overshadowed by the pressures I faced. Dance, which had always been my escape and passion, began to feel like an obligation and chore. This left me questioning my commitment to something that had been a major part of who I was. However, the decision to change studios brought a fresh perspective and marked a special time in my journey as a dancer.

The new studio was not just a change of environment, but it was a shift in culture. The teachers at The Movement Studios introduced a teaching style that emphasized artistry and individuality along with technical precision. Unlike my previous experience, where perfection often felt like my main focus, my new instructors encouraged me to explore expression through movement. They saw dance as more than a series of steps but rather it was a language that could depict emotions and ideas. This perspective helped me to regain the spark I thought I had lost, reminding me why I fell in love with dance in the first place.

One teacher, in particular, had a great impact on me. Ms Nicole was the reason I changed studios. I met her while she was teaching a class at my old studio, and I felt the passion she had for teaching right away. She challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, pushing me to experiment with styles I had previously avoided. Ms. Nicole’s critiques were not only constructive but deeply personal. She genuinely wanted to help me grow as both a dancer and an individual. Through her mentorship, I began to see my potential in a new light. I assisted her dance classes from 2019 to present and through assisting her, I not only learned the valuable lesson of teaching the younger dancers, but I also learned how to become a mentor at my studio. She had helped encourage me to trust my instincts and embrace vulnerability, which was illustrated through my performances that felt more personal and fulfilling.

Additionally, the supportive community at the new studio played a significant role in my passion. The love among the dancers, who shared similar highs and lows, reminded me that I was not alone in my journey. We celebrated each other’s progress and supported one another through challenges, creating an environment where growth was celebrated, not just achievement.

This change also taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance. Starting over in a new studio was intimidating at first, but it forced me to face my fears and rebuild my confidence. It was through this process that I rediscovered my passion and deepened my commitment to dance.

Changing studios allowed me to view dance through a new perspective, reigniting my passion and reminding me of its power. It taught me that growth often requires struggles and that rediscovering joy in something you love is always worth the effort. This experience not only strengthened my love for dance but also strengthened its role as a lifelong journey.
