Life in Community Service by Bailey - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
Getting a degree in music education will allow me to become a teacher, creating a better community through enlightenment. I have known since my sophomore year that this is my calling. I truly do believe music makes life better, and not because it makes people smarter or raises test scores. The best argument for music education is that it’s fun! Many students don’t have extra-curriculars to keep them busy, resulting in loads of stress. Music will prevent such stress and help people find their way in life.
I have been a leader my whole life, and I know I have done my job well when I see my students’ faces light up. My goal is to be able to see that every day. That’s how I find both my success and happiness, and that’s when I know my hard work pays off. I want everyone to know what will make their face light up, and if I get to have a role in that, I get to change their life for the better.
For the past five years, I have been part of a high school group dedicated to teaching each other how to be a leader and what that means. Most of what TREK (Teens Reaching to Expand the Kingdom) does is community service and volunteering. Since we are a part of a musical theater group, we lead a lot of events and do a great deal of serving there. Community service, along with music, are my two passions.
