Avid changed me for the better by Bailey - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

The organization that helped me is AVID, it has changed me for the better. Since being in AVID I have been a better person inside and outside of school. I have given back to my community and volunteered at many other places. Such as thrift stores, food and clothing drives, and my local library. Since being in AVID not only have my grades have changed drastically, but also my friends.
Avid has taught how to get support from my peers and also how to give support to my peers. AVID helped me get my grade up in Math, I was unsure if I was going to be able to pass. Being in AVID meant I had to have high grades, and if I was failing I would have to go to tutoring.
Even though I didn't want to at first it was a good thing AVID made that a requirement because by going to tutoring my grade went from an F to a C within two weeks. I also encouraged some fellow friends who weren't doing well either to go with me to tutoring. We were able to catch up on my work and able to understand what I was being taught without falling behind. I along with my friends passed my first semester of math with the support of AVID.
AVID provides tutors when needed and tutorials every Tuesday and Friday. A tutorial is where a group of students each bring in a question about whatever class they are confused and help each other figure it out. This helped me with my grades in English, Spanish, and Math. Although the second semester of math was very hard and I did not pass. AVID made it a requirement that I went to summer school so I could change the grade so it would look better when I applied to college.
I passed summer school earlier than many others, I passed within one week instead of 3. I was able to change my grade from being an F to a B. AVID has also given me chances to see future colleges I might want to apply to. In my Junior year, we went on an overnight field trip and visited 10 colleges up North. I was able to see many colleges I had no idea about and make many friends. I had a great bond with my fellow classmates and was able to get to know them and my teachers better.
AVID is an extraordinary program I am proud to be apart of! Not only have I been able to be a better student, but I have also become a better person by being in AVID. I’ve developed strong relationships with many people. Before AVID I would be in a lot of drama and do poorly in school. Since being in AVID, I have made amends and am now friends with everyone I have had a problem with. I am now doing very well in school and outside. I am continuing to give back to my community and improving myself every day.
