My Essay by Bassam - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Bassam Ahmed, and I am a high school senior with a deep interest in Information Technology and STEM fields. As I look forward to pursuing my education at Trine University, I reflect on the challenges I have faced during my high school years and how they have shaped my journey. One particular academic experience stands out as both challenging and transformative.

Throughout high school, I have always been drawn to technology and the endless possibilities it offers. However, my journey has not always been smooth. I have faced challenges, like maintaining a strong GPA, which has often been a struggle for me. My GPA currently stands at 2.7, and while it may not reflect the passion and effort I have put into my studies, it tells a story of perseverance and growth.

One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my junior year in a computer science class. The course was known for its rigorous curriculum and demanding projects, and it was crucial for me as I planned to major in IT. The class was filled with students who seemed to grasp concepts effortlessly, while I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace.

The turning point came when we were assigned a major project that required us to develop a software application from scratch. At first, I felt overwhelmed by the complexity of the task. I doubted my abilities and feared that I would not be able to complete the project on time. The pressure to perform well was immense, as this project would significantly impact my overall grade.

I realized that I needed to approach this challenge differently. I started by breaking the project down into smaller, manageable tasks. This helped me focus on one aspect at a time, rather than being overwhelmed by the entire project. I also reached out to my teacher and classmates for support. My teacher provided valuable guidance and resources, while my classmates shared their insights and encouraged me to keep pushing forward.

In addition to seeking help, I dedicated extra time outside of class to work on the project. I spent countless hours in the library and at home, researching and experimenting with different coding techniques. Gradually, I began to see progress. The small victories along the way motivated me to keep going, even when I encountered setbacks.

Another important lesson I learned was the power of collaboration. Working with my classmates taught me the value of teamwork and diverse perspectives. We often held study sessions where we exchanged ideas and solved problems together. This not only helped me understand the material better but also built my confidence in my abilities.

As the deadline approached, I managed to complete the project and present it to the class. It was not perfect, but it was a significant achievement for me. I learned that perseverance and a willingness to seek help can turn challenges into opportunities for growth. The experience taught me to embrace difficulties as part of the learning process and to never give up, even when the odds seem stacked against me.

Reflecting on this experience, I realize that my academic journey has been about more than just grades. It has been about discovering my strengths and weaknesses, learning how to overcome obstacles, and developing a mindset that values resilience and determination. These lessons will undoubtedly serve me well as I pursue my studies in IT and STEM at Trine University.

I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and am committed to making the most of my college experience. I know that challenges will continue to arise, but I am confident in my ability to face them head-on and grow from each experience. My journey has taught me that success is not just about achieving high grades, but about the perseverance and passion you bring to your goals.

In conclusion, the challenging academic experience I faced in my computer science class taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, collaboration, and the importance of seeking help when needed. It has prepared me for the road ahead and strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in Information Technology. I am eager to continue learning and growing, both academically and personally, as I embark on this exciting new chapter at Trine University.
